Celebrate Culture, Community, and Dance

Every year from September 15 to October 15, the United States observes Hispanic Heritage Month, a time dedicated to honoring the histories, cultures, and contributions of Americans with roots in Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America.

For those of us who live and breathe Latin dance—salsa, bachata, merengue, and beyond—this month is also a reminder of how deeply music and dance connect us to tradition, identity, and community.

Why Hispanic Heritage Month is Celebrated

Hispanic Heritage Month begins on September 15, a date chosen because it marks the independence anniversaries of Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. Mexico (September 16) and Chile (September 18) also celebrate independence around this time, making mid-September especially meaningful across Latin America.

The celebration first started in 1968 as “Hispanic Heritage Week” and was expanded to a full month in 1988. Today, it is a nationwide observance that highlights Hispanic and Latino contributions in politics, science, business, art, music, sports, and more.

The Diversity of Hispanic and Latino Heritage

It’s important to recognize that “Hispanic” and “Latino” are umbrella terms covering more than 20 countries and countless cultural traditions. The music of Cuba differs from that of Colombia; Mexican folklore tells different stories than Puerto Rican legends. Yet together, these cultures share resilience, pride, and creativity that have helped shape the United States.

The Role of Dance in Hispanic Heritage

Dance is one of the most vibrant expressions of Hispanic and Latino culture. From the Afro-Caribbean rhythms of salsa to the sensual flow of bachata, dance is more than entertainment—it’s storytelling, history, and identity in motion.

During Hispanic Heritage Month, many communities showcase cultural performances, and Latin dance is often at the heart of these celebrations. It’s a way to honor tradition while also inviting people of all backgrounds to connect, celebrate, and learn.

As a Latin dance academy, we believe dance is one of the most joyful and authentic ways to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month. When you learn salsa or bachata, you’re not just learning steps—you’re connecting to rhythms with deep cultural roots and joining a tradition that has brought people together for generations.

Whether you’re completely new to Latin dance or looking to refine your skills, this month is the perfect time to start. Not only will you move your body, but you’ll also gain a deeper appreciation for the cultures that make these dances so powerful.
