salsa level difficulty classes in Los angeles

Salsa 1 – Beginner

Who it’s for: Absolute beginners who have never taken a salsa class before.

In this level, we build the foundation: rhythm, timing, partner connection, and core footwork. You’ll be able to lead or follow with ease and enjoy social dancing with any partner.

You’ll learn:

  • Basic timing and rhythm (on1 style)

  • Understanding the 8-count structure in salsa music

  • Basic footwork and weight transfer

  • Open and closed dance positions

  • Partner connection and frame

  • Right and left turns for both leader and follower

  • Basic cross-body lead

  • Simple turn combinations

  • Shines (solo steps) for coordination and rhythm

  • Dance etiquette and social dancing tips

By the end of Salsa 1, you’ll know around 30 core moves and feel comfortable dancing socially with any partner in Los Angeles.

You’re ready for Salsa 1 if you:

  • Have little to no partner-dance experience

  • Don’t yet feel steady keeping time with the music

  • Want a supportive, step-by-step start

How You’ll Use It in Social Dancing:

After completing Salsa 1, you’ll be ready to dance confidently at any beginner-friendly social or club. You’ll know how to stay on beat, lead or follow simple turns, and enjoy dancing with multiple partners. These moves are the language of the dance floor, and they’ll make every social outing fun, friendly, and comfortable.

Salsa 2 – Intermediate

Who it’s for: Dancers who are familiar with the basics and ready to add more style, precision, and musical understanding.

In this level, we introduce 18 intermediate-level moves that expand on what you’ve already learned. You’ll start exploring turns, styling, and smoother transitions between combinations. The focus is on refining technique, improving body control, and developing a better sense of timing and coordination.

You’ll learn:

  • 18 intermediate-level patterns, including:

    • Cross-body lead variations (inside/outside turns, double spins)

    • Hammerlock and sweetheart combinations

    • Copa and reverse copa

    • Wrap and unwind patterns

  • Intermediate shines and footwork coordination

  • Body movement and isolation techniques (shoulders, hips, ribcage)

  • Partner styling and connection dynamics

  • Timing variations and rhythm syncopation

  • Smooth transitions between combinations

  • Introduction to shines integration in partner dancing

Salsa 2 is where you start feeling the music more deeply and begin expressing your personal style.

You’re ready for Salsa 2 if you:

  • Keep time consistently and execute basic turns cleanly

  • Can lead/follow a cross-body lead without hesitation

  • Want smoother spins, better styling, and musical play

How You’ll Use It in Social Dancing:

At this stage, you’ll feel more comfortable on crowded dance floors and confident dancing with intermediate and advanced partners. You’ll be able to mix combinations fluidly, add styling, and adapt to different songs and tempos. You’ll stand out not just because of your moves, but because of your connection, control, and musical awareness.

Salsa 3 – Advanced

Who it’s for: Experienced dancers ready to play with musicality and creativity.

At this stage, there’s no fixed number of moves: the combinations are limitless. We emphasize partner coordination, complex turn patterns, and advanced musicality.

You’ll master:

  • Advanced turn patterns with both partners turning within one 8-count (leaders turn on 7)

  • Complex hand changes and shadow position transitions

  • Circular and rotational movement sequences (less linear style)

  • Musicality: hitting breaks, accents, and syncopations

  • Advanced shines and footwork layering

  • Incorporating body rolls, shoulder shimmies, and isolations

  • Partner styling, improvisation, and playfulness

  • Leading and following with subtle cues and body awareness

  • Advanced connection techniques for smooth, effortless flow

There’s no fixed number of moves in Level 3; you’ll explore endless creative combinations that challenge and inspire your dancing.

You’re ready for Salsa 3 if you:

  • Maintain balance and timing under fast, complex turns

  • Read musical accents and adjust patterns on the fly

  • Lead/follow advanced entries/exits with minimal cues

Salsa 3 is about expression! Transforming steps into storytelling and rhythm into movement.

How You’ll Use It in Social Dancing:

In advanced social settings, you’ll have the confidence and creativity to improvise on the dance floor, interpret musical breaks, and connect deeply with your partner’s movement. You’ll be able to adapt to different dance styles (LA on 1, New York on 2, etc.), navigate fast songs, and make every dance a unique conversation. Many students at this level also explore performing, teaching, or competing, or simply enjoy the artistry of high-level social dancing.

Why We Define Our Levels

Choosing the right class level is one of the most important decisions you can make as a dancer.

When you enroll in the class that matches your current skills, you’ll get the best learning experience, one that challenges you just enough to grow without feeling lost or overwhelmed.

Here’s why it matters:

  • 🧠 Build the right foundation: Starting at the right level ensures you master key techniques before adding complexity. Skipping ahead can create habits that are harder to fix later.

  • 💃 Stay confident and motivated: When a class matches your comfort zone and skill set, you’ll progress faster and actually enjoy the process.

  • 🤝 Support your dance partners: Each class level is designed so everyone moves together at the same pace — which means better connection and smoother dancing for everyone.

  • 🎵 Enjoy the music more: Understanding timing, rhythm, and musicality at your level helps you dance with freedom and expression, not just memorized steps.

  • 🚀 Progress naturally: Once you’ve built confidence in one level, moving up becomes exciting and rewarding — you’ll actually feel your growth in every dance.

At LA Salsa and Bachata Dance Academy, our goal is to create a fun, inclusive learning environment where every student — from beginners to seasoned dancers — can shine. Knowing your level helps us give you the exact experience, pacing, and feedback that will make you love every beat of your salsa journey.

We believe in creating a clear, supportive path for every dancer. Whether you’re starting fresh or advancing your skills, you’ll always know where you belong and what comes next.

Quick Self-Assessment: Which Class Fits Me Best?

  • Pick Salsa 1 if you’re new, rebuilding fundamentals, or want a confidence-first start.

  • Pick Salsa 2 if basics feel automatic and you’re ready for cleaner spins, styling, and flow.

  • Pick Salsa 3 if you comfortably manage intricate patterns, musical hits, and improvisation in social or performance settings.
